From Italy to Richmond

The Franco’s story begins in Italy, when a passionate young Franco Ambrogi began making suits at the age of 11.  After coming to America ten years later, he began working as a tailor for Berry-Burk Clothing and Thalhimer's in Richmond's financial district downtown.  Franco quickly earned the reputation as one of Richmond's finest tailors, well-respected for his tailoring expertise, exceptional craftsmanship and friendly disposition.

Franco's love of the menswear industry and desire to provide quality in every aspect of the customer experience fueled his passion to open his own clothing store.  In 1972, Franco and his wife, Ruth opened the first Franco's store just north of Richmond's city limits on Lakeside Avenue.

Franco's Flagship Location

In 1985, Franco expanded his small storefront location to a 35,000 sq ft store, complete with an in-house tailor shop and marble-floored rotunda loosely modeled after the Galleria in Milan, Italy.  The Lakeside store location remains to this day as the flagship store and corporate headquarters of the family-owned and run business.

Franco's Lakeside store is also home to the company's large, in-house tailor shop, where Franco continues to oversee today.  Son-in-law, Kevin Reardon and daughter, Maria manage store operations and buying, while Franco's son, Mark Ambrogi oversees the buying and operations of Franco's west end store located in Short Pump Town Center.

A Family Dedicated to a Tradition of  Service and Quality

Over the next 30 years, Franco’s growth continued with new store locations opening in response to customer needs within the Financial District and South of the James River.

"When the Quality Shows...it Must be Franco's"

Quality is the hallmark of Franco's.  Whether its staying abreast of the relevant style trends, keeping an eye on quality craftsmanship, ensuring that each garment fits to perfection, or delivering garments in a timely manner, quality in every aspect of the business is the foundation of the family business.

If You Love What You Do, You'll Do it Well...

Throughout the years and continuing to this day, Franco’s Fine Clothier has been honored with accolades and recognitions over the past 40+ years.  In the 1980's, Franco's was recognized as "Retailer of the Year" by Retail Merchants Association, and for the past 25 years, Franco's has been voted “Best Menswear Store” year after year in readers polls, as featured in Richmond magazine, Style Weekly and Virginia magazine.
